Understanding Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the most durable solutions for missing teeth. Here's how they work and what to expect.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants have become the preferred long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. A titanium post is surgically placed into the jawbone, acting as an artificial root, onto which a custom crown is later fitted to complete the restoration.

Why Choose Implants Over Other Options?

  • Long-lasting — with proper care, implants can last 15–25 years or longer, far outlasting bridges or dentures.
  • Preserve jawbone health — unlike bridges, implants stimulate the jawbone the way a natural tooth root would, preventing the bone loss that often follows tooth loss.
  • No impact on neighbouring teeth — unlike a bridge, which requires shaving down adjacent teeth, an implant stands independently.
  • Natural look and feel — the crown is custom-shaded and shaped to blend seamlessly with your existing teeth.

The Treatment Process

  1. Consultation & Assessment — X-rays and a 3D scan assess bone density and plan implant positioning.
  2. Implant Placement — the titanium post is placed under local anaesthetic in a short surgical appointment.
  3. Healing Period — osseointegration, where the implant fuses with the jawbone, typically takes 3–6 months.
  4. Crown Fitting — once healed, an abutment and custom crown are fitted to complete the restoration.

Recovery

Most patients experience mild swelling and discomfort for a few days, manageable with standard painkillers. Soft foods are recommended during the first week, with full integration taking a few months depending on the individual case.

Are Implants Right For You?

Good candidates generally have adequate jawbone density and healthy gums. Where bone loss has occurred, a bone graft may be recommended beforehand to ensure the implant has a stable foundation.
