Clear Aligners
Clear aligners are a series of thin, transparent trays made from a scan or impression of your teeth. You wear each set for a set period of time and then move on to the next, as your teeth gradually shift towards the planned position.
Aligners are removable, so you take them out to eat, drink and clean your teeth. Because of that, how well treatment works depends a great deal on wearing them as instructed.
Clear aligners are not suitable for everyone or for every kind of tooth movement. An assessment is needed first, so that your dentist can explain whether they could work for you and what the alternatives are, such as fixed braces.

Are clear aligners painful?
You may feel pressure or tenderness, especially when you start a new set of trays. This usually settles after a few days, but everyone is different. Tell your dentist if discomfort is severe or does not ease.
How long will treatment take?
It depends on your teeth and how far they need to move. Your dentist will give you an estimate at your assessment. Treatment can take longer if aligners are not worn as advised.
How long do I need to wear them each day?
Usually for most of the day, taking them out only to eat, drink and clean. Your dentist will give you exact instructions for your plan.
Can anyone have clear aligners?
No. Aligners suit some people and some kinds of tooth movement, but not others. Your dentist will examine you and explain whether they are suitable, or whether another option such as fixed braces would be more appropriate.
Will I need a retainer afterwards?
Yes, usually. Teeth can move back after treatment, so a retainer is normally advised to help keep them in position. Your dentist will explain which type and how long to wear it.
Will people be able to see my aligners?
Aligners are made of clear plastic and are less noticeable than traditional braces, but they may still be visible up close.
Can I eat and drink with aligners in?
You should take them out to eat and to drink anything other than plain water, and clean your teeth before putting them back in. Your dentist will explain the details.
What if I lose or break an aligner?
Contact us as soon as possible. Do not skip ahead to the next set without advice, because that can affect how your teeth move.
