ABOUT THIS SERVICE

Dental Implants

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. It is a small titanium post that is placed in the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone over time. A replacement tooth, such as a crown, is then attached to it. The aim is a replacement that looks and feels as natural as possible.

Implant treatment is a surgical procedure and is carried out in stages, with a healing period in between. It is not suitable for everyone. Your dentist will examine you, take scans or X-rays, and explain whether implants could work for you and what the alternatives are, such as bridges or dentures.

Success cannot be guaranteed. Implants need good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, and they can fail or need further treatment. Your dentist will explain the risks so that you can decide with full information.

WHAT TO KNOW

Are dental implants right for you?

Only a dentist can tell you if implants are suitable, after an examination and scans.

Who may consider implants

  • People with one or more missing teeth
  • People who would like a fixed alternative to a bridge or denture
  • People with healthy gums and enough bone, or who may be able to have bone built up first

What can affect suitability

  • Gum disease or decay that has not been treated
  • Smoking
  • Certain health conditions, such as poorly controlled diabetes
  • Some medicines, and previous radiotherapy to the jaw
  • Not enough bone in the area, which may need to be built up first

What treatment involves

  • An assessment, with X-rays or scans
  • Placing the implant in the jaw under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation
  • A healing period, while the implant fuses with the bone
  • Fitting the replacement tooth, such as a crown

Risks to be aware of

  • Infection or the implant not fusing with the bone
  • Damage to nearby teeth, nerves or, in the upper jaw, the sinuses
  • Gum recession or inflammation around the implant over time
  • The need for further treatment, and the possibility that an implant is lost

Not sure whether implants, a bridge, a denture or another option is right for you? Book an assessment and your dentist can talk through each.

HOW IT WORKS

What to expect

  1. 01

    Consultation

Your dentist discusses your missing teeth and what you would like, examines your mouth and gums, and asks about your health and medicines.

  2. 02

    X-rays and scans

Scans or X-rays show the bone and the position of nearby nerves and sinuses, so that your dentist can plan treatment.

  3. 03

    Implant placement

The implant is placed in the jawbone under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation. You are given instructions for caring for the area as it heals.

  4. 04

    Healing and replacement tooth

Once the implant has healed and fused with the bone, the replacement tooth is made and fitted, and your dentist explains how to look after it.

QUESTIONS

Dental Implants FAQs

Does having an implant hurt?

Implants are normally placed under local anaesthetic, so the area should be numb, and sedation may be offered. It is common to have some soreness, swelling or bruising afterwards. Your dentist will explain what to expect and how to manage it.

How long does treatment take?

It happens in stages with a healing period between them, so it often takes several months. Your dentist will give you an estimate for your own case.

How long will an implant last?

There is no fixed lifespan. It depends on factors including your oral hygiene, gum health, smoking and general health. Implants can fail, and may need maintenance or replacement.

Am I suitable for implants?

That depends on your gum health, the amount of bone available, your general health and other factors. Only an examination and scans can tell you.

What if I do not have enough bone?

Sometimes bone can be built up before or during implant treatment. Your dentist will explain whether this is an option for you and what it involves.

Are implants better than bridges or dentures?

Each option has advantages and disadvantages. Your dentist will explain them, including the cost, the maintenance and the risks, so that you can choose what suits you.

How do I look after an implant?

Clean around it carefully, as you would a natural tooth, and attend regular check-ups. Gum disease around an implant can cause it to fail, so good cleaning matters. Your dentist will show you how.

Can I have implants if I smoke?

Smoking can make implant treatment less likely to succeed. Your dentist will discuss this with you and may advise stopping, or may decide that implants are not suitable.

How much does it cost?

Our current listed price is from £2200. The total cost depends on your needs, and your dentist will give you an estimate before you decide.
