Fixed Retainers
After orthodontic treatment, teeth can slowly drift back towards where they were. A retainer helps to hold them in their new position. A fixed retainer is a thin wire that is bonded to the back surfaces of your teeth, so it stays in place and does not depend on you remembering to wear it.
It sits behind your teeth, where it is not usually noticeable from the front. You clean around it with a few small changes to your routine, and your dentist will show you how.
A fixed retainer is not right for everyone, and it needs looking after. Your dentist will explain the benefits and the things to consider, and whether a removable retainer, or a combination, would suit you better.

What it is

Looking after it

- It can be harder to clean around, so plaque and tartar can build up

Does fitting a fixed retainer hurt?
Fitting is not normally painful, because the wire is bonded to the surface of your teeth rather than into them. You may feel the wire with your tongue at first, and that usually settles as you get used to it.
How long do I keep a fixed retainer?
Your dentist will advise. Some people keep a retainer for many years to help hold their teeth in position. It needs to be checked regularly while it is in place.
Can I still brush and floss?
Yes, but you will need to clean around the wire carefully. Your dentist will show you how to do this, for example with floss threaders or small interdental brushes.
What if the wire comes loose or breaks?
Contact us as soon as you notice. A loose or broken retainer can let your teeth move, so it is sensible to have it checked and repaired promptly.
Will people be able to see it?
It sits behind your teeth, so it is not usually noticeable from the front.
Can I have one if I have never had braces?
Retainers are used to hold teeth in position after they have moved. Talk to your dentist about your teeth and whether a retainer would be appropriate.
Will I still need a removable retainer?
Sometimes. Your dentist will advise whether a fixed retainer, a removable one, or both would suit your teeth.
